Late goals rob the Romans of a hard-fought victory….

Sandbach United FC 4-3 Rocester FC.

Two late goals robbed Rocester of a hard-fought victory which could have earned them some much-needed points and eased their relegation worries.

Sandbach went ahead in the 9th minute when Ollie Pope got onto the end of a great cross from Will Buckley to tap in.

Score:  Sandbach United FC 1-0 Rocester FC

However, the Romans had other ideas and in the 19th minute, they were back on level terms when Captain Cavan Holford made no mistakes as he headed a Rocester corner into the top right-hand corner of the Sandbach net.

Sandbach then responded with three good efforts in the next five minutes before Rocester put in a rapid counter attack which was finished off by Seedorf Mendes!

However, Sandbach maintained their resolve and in the 31st minute, a Sandbach corner was met by Matt Pearson’s head from 8 yards out and it flew in.

Three minutes later, Rocester were awarded a penalty following a late tackle in the Sandbach area and although the Sandbach ‘keeper managed to stop the shot, Cavan Holford pounced on the resulting loose ball and put it away to restore the Romans’ lead!

Unfortunately, in the 39th minute, Charles Leybourn saw red for Rocester but despite being down to 10 men, the Romans held out to the half-time whistle despite a concerted effort by the home side.

Half-time score:  Sandbach United FC 2-3 Rocester FC

Sandbach started the second half in determined fashion and really started to press home their numeric advantage. However, Rocester still looked dangerous on the break although they were having to resort to some physical defensive play.

It was not until the 72nd minute that Sandbach equalised when Brian Barton held up the ball excellently before laying off for Matt Pearson to drive a low effort into the bottom left-hand corner for his second goal.

Score:  Sandbach United FC 3-3 Rocester FC

Sandbach were now on top of their game, but the Romans defended resolutely until the 84th minute when Matt Pearson picked up the ball on the right-hand side and rifled a left-footed effort in at the near post for his hat-trick.

Score:  Sandbach United FC 4-3 Rocester FC

The Romans didn’t give up despite the pressure and although Sandbach came close, their efforts were repelled.

Full-time score:   Sandbach United FC 4-3 Rocester FC

The Romans really put in a shift in this game and were unlucky to come away with nothing… Their performance prompted the following tweet on the Sandbach Twitter Site….

“Big 3 points!! It was a tough game, credit to @RocesterFC1876 for fighting right until the end. What a game. Brilliant advert for non-league football”.

So, c’mon you mighty Romans!!!
