Northwest Counties League Division 1(S)

Rocester went close to a point away to the division’s leading scorers, FC Isle of Man, but eventually lost 2-1….

The Islanders were awarded a penalty in the 17thminute after Luke Murray was adjudged to have been pushed. Jack McVey stepped up and scored from the resulting spot kick.

Score: FC Isle of Man 1-0 Rocester FC

The home side maintained the pressure with both Lee Gayle and Sean Doyle hitting the woodwork.

In addition, the Romans’ ‘keeper, Charlie Wood, made some excellent saves to keep Rocester in the game.

Half-time score:  FC Isle of Man 1-0 Rocester FC

Within four minutes of the restart, the Islanders added a second goal to their tally when Sean Doyle got onto the end of a Lee Gale cross to head home his 24th goal of the season.

Score: FC Isle of Man 2-0 Rocester FC

The Islanders continued to dominate proceedings but were unable to further break down the Romans’ defence largely due to a stellar performance by Charlie Wood.

In the 68thminute, the Islanders were reduced to 10 men when Lee Gale ‘saw red’ following a second yellow card for an ‘off the ball’ incident.

This allowed the Romans to re-engage and just 3 minutes later were awarded a penalty of their own following a foul by Ryan Burns.

Captain Cavan Holford stepped up to silence the ‘2,000 plus’ crowd when he neatly slammed the ball into the bottom corner!

Score: FC Isle of Man 2-1 Rocester FC

Rocester were back in the game and continued to maintain the pressure on the home side until the 88th minute when unfortunately, the Romans were also reduced to ten men after Rory Regan was sent off for a second yellow card offence.

Despite the return to parity, the Romans continued to maintain the pressure up to the whistle. Unfortunately, the Islanders hung on for their fifth successive win!

A great battling performance and we came so close to sharing the spoils against one of the best in the league… So it’s onwards and upwards!
