Saturday 23rd October

Rocester FC v West Didsbury & Chorlton FC
Northwest Counties League Division One (South)
Kick-off 3:00pm

For the second consecutive match, the score line did not reflect the contribution made by the Romans as they faced a stiff task when playing a team who are thus far unbeaten and who are current league leaders….

Once again, Rocester started really well and put up a brave fight as they ‘gave as good as they got’ for long spells before conceding their first goal in the 31st minute when Ben Elliot put in a cross from the right which found the unmarked Dontai Gabbidon who neatly headed in past Charlie Wood and into the Romans’ goal.

Score: Rocester 0-1 West Didsbury & Chorlton.

The Romans (to their credit), just ‘picked themselves up’ and continued to play some excellent football up to the half-time whistle.

Half-time score: Rocester 0-1 West Didsbury & Chorlton.

West Didsbury & Chorlton doubled their tally some six minutes into the second half when Ben Elliot ‘shoulder charged’ the Romans’ left-back to take possession. He then rounded Charlie Wood and slammed the ball into the empty net!

Score: Rocester 0-2 West Didsbury & Chorlton.

However, the Romans did not give up but continued to play right up to the final whistle with plenty of creative moves and pressure thrown in for good measure.

Full-time score: Rocester 0-2 West Didsbury & Chorlton.

Despite going down by two goals to nil, Rocester never gave up and once again, had their fair share of the possession. They are definitely beginning to play as a more cohesive unit and the players appear to be communicating more effectively.

In addition, there were some great individual performances and the Romans rarely ‘dropped their guard’ – unfortunately, when they did, they were punished!

However, when considering that this fixture was between two teams from opposite ends of the league, the match ebbed and flowed and apart from two goals conceded, it proved to be an entertaining spectacle for all of the supporters, played in the spirit of the game and an excellent advert for the NWCL Division 1(S).

It really looks like the Romans are beginning to gel!!!
