Rocester FC v Atherstone Town FC
MFL Division One
The Romans were beaten 5-1 at home as they played hosts to Atherstone Town FC, although the match was not as 'one-sided' as the score would suggest...
Rocester had the first chance early in the game when Liam Robinson's shot appeared to be blocked by the arm of a defender but calls for a penalty were dismissed. However, seconds later, Liam broke through, unleased a shot and was denied by a good save from Carl O’Neill.
Atherstone countered the initial Rocester pressure when they broke down the left and then took the lead when Niall Rowe rounded the keeper and slotted into the net.
Rocester 0 Atherstone 1
The Romans didn't rest on their laurels but continued to pressurise the visitors' defence and created numerous chances over the next twenty minutes or so including an excellent move when Liam Robinson made a fantastic run as he beat two players before smashing the ball against the post.
Soon after, from a corner, the ball dropped to Josh Sedgley in the box, but he fired it well over the bar!
Following this, the Atherstone keeper made a great save when Jordan Dodd fired in a shot from the edge of the area.
Rocester were definitely taking the game to the Adders and we were convinced that it was just a matter of time before the Romans found the net!
Rocester 0 Atherstone 1
Following the break, Rocester continued in the same vein and their persistence was rewarded in the 48th minute when Elisio Francisco equalised from the edge of the box, as his shot deflected past the keeper!
Rocester 1 Atherstone 1
Although Rocester were in creative form, the visitors always looked dangerous on the break and just 4 minutes later, Atherstone were back in front as Ryan Quinn finished superbly when 'one on one' with the Roman's keeper.
Rocester 1 Atherstone 2
Just two minutes later and it was 3-1 to Atherstone following a break down the left with their winger cutting in in before squaring it to the advancing Mitchell Thompson who promptly planted the ball in the net.
Rocester 1 Atherstone 3
The visitors were then awarded a penalty in the 67th minute and Charlie Wood made an absolutely superb save, diving to his right.
By now, Rocester were 'throwing the kitchen sink' at the game which left them exposed at the back and the game was well and truly over in the 82nd minute as the visitors' winger once again cut in from the left and squared for Danny Harris to slot the ball into an empty net.
Rocester 1 Atherstone 4
In the 88th minute, just to add insult to injury, the visitors scored a fifth as a free kick from deep inside the Roman's half was headed in at the far post by Kurtis Mewies.
Rocester 1-5 Atherstone Town
In conclusion, the score line was not a true reflection of this match - especially in the first half - and the Romans were unlucky to be 'one down' at the break and really didn't get the 'rub of the green'.
However, if they keep creating
chances, sooner or later they are going to find their winning ways once again.
